Le Nabi hollandais
Born to a Jewish family in Amsterdam. Dien in1894 in the Netherlands.
Spent his youth in London. Met Pissarro there who recommended he meet Gauguin, with whom he became an intimate friend. Went to Pont Aven and then to Le Pouldu. Poor health and family dissuaded him from continuing on to the Oceania with Gauguin.
He was a small, deformed, strange man of rare intelligence. There are Gauguin portraits of him and a bust of painted oak. He and Gauguin were the original model of the painter in Somerset Maugham’s fictional biography, The Moon and Sixpence.
