• Italian art history and critics of 16^th century used the term at the end of the Gothic period to describe art that was not Romanesque or Renaissance.
   

• Goths – Ostrogoths and Vizigoths of 4^th and 5^th century attacked Italian and Iberian penisulas which contributed to the collaspe of the Roman Empire. Gothic was a derogatory term until 19^th cent.

• Dividing point with Renaissance: Classical orders c 1400 in Italy, 1500 North of the Alps
