Italian art history and critics of 16th century
used the term at the end of the Gothic period to describe art that was not
Romanesque or Renaissance.
Goths – Ostrogoths and Vizigoths of 4th and 5th century
attacked Italian and Iberian penisulas which contributed to the collaspe of the
Roman Empire. Gothic was a derogatory term until 19th cent.
